Budget questions asked by Board of Education
Comments off · Posted by admin in Uncategorized
“During the budget process, questions asked by members of the Board of Education are compiled. Appropriate staff from Montgomery County Public Schools answer the questions as soon as all information has been gathered to respond in full. The questions and answers are also made available to the public on [the MCPS] website.”
Some of the questions asked by Board members:
– What is the budget for after-school activities?
– What would be the budget savings if elementary, middle and high school staff development teachers were eliminated?
– What is budgeted under other contractual services and miscellaneous in the Department of Family and Community Partnerships?
Answers to these and other questions can be found at the MCPS website.

MCTL Vice-President Bob Monsheimer gave a presentation to the County’s Board of Education January 19, 2011
Our Thoughts;
We believe that the Board will be asked to reduce the recommended budget by 60 million dollars in order to be a part of the entire fiscal package when the Council acts.
Where do we think the savings should come from?
- A review of student population is one area saving as much as 10 million dollars.
- Any staff salary increases should be in the form of performance bonuses and not as a step increase keeping the pool well under the 14 million proposed
- Adding only 5 additional building workers 1.3 million dollars
- Eliminating free dependent life insurance 100K
- Changing the assumption of new teachers to maintain FY 11 actual ratios; 1 to 3 million
- Reduce MCPS share of benefit costs to reflect MCGEO rates, saving a minimum of 35 million dollars. (A simple increase of co-pays of $5.00 additional would start this out)
- Is it time to increase the rates for part-time employees as is done in most other jurisdictions throughout this area?
